In Pittsville, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in this domain, we provide hair drug or alcohol tests with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized to fit specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence due to increased adoption by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by entities with strict no-drug policies for their extended detection period, going up to 90 days, under supervised collection. While challenging to tamper with, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows, hair can provide an extended history of substance use. When taken from the area near the scalp, hair may reveal drug or alcohol presence for around a 90-day timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (approximating the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for testing. For EtG additions or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing to produce a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into a lab’s framework. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial review for drugs of abuse. Screening is cost-efficient and useful for quickly excluding drug usage in most samples, but a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that are presumptive positives in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set up for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration from hair as opposed to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to cheat, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: Tests can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the sub-scalp hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
