Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Pleasant Grove, Maryland. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area with testing centers in every major city nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Generally, individuals must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body for testing purposes. Hair tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing options.

The trend of incorporating hair follicle drug tests in drug testing protocols has surged in recent years. This method is increasingly demanded by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals instead of the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve entities with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary individuals. This testing provides extended detection periods, typically up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that is very difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use in a recent 5-day timeframe, urine tests continue to be the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term biomarkers of alcohol and other substances within its growing fibers. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over a 3-month time frame. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of hair. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test result in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use for most samples, any positive results must be confirmed to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

A sample showing presumptive positivity during Screening undergoes further preparation in the Extraction stage, where drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historic usage patterns: It provides a timeline of drug use, not merely recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the examination evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
