Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance screening in Point of Rocks, Maryland. For those requiring drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, we specialize in hair analyses, with numerous centers nationwide ready to administer these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body can be sampled. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be specialized for other testing needs.

In recent times, drug screening methods increasingly feature hair follicle testing. This option is preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle screenings are utilized by employers with strict drug policies, judicial entities, and for individuals under probation. The key advantage is the extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, with a supervised sample collection process, making evasion almost impossible. Yet, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine analysis remains the most accurate.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term archive of alcohol and other substances, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 strands of hair (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s precision scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. When we reference head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary quick test for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for it to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other techniques (urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Displays historical usage: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though often named "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.
