Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug analyses in Pondsville, Maryland. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities across all U.S. cities able to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are used. Analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific hair test options.

In recent times, drug testing techniques have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts insist on hair drug testing over the conventional urine method. Hair follicle analyses appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies and probation institutions. Their core advantage is an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it effectively tamper-proof. However, for recent usage within 5 days, urine testing remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When obtained from close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window for alcohol and other substances extending up to about 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to alteration, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair fibers (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest evaluating the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a proportional quantity of body hair is permissible. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial handling of a specimen into a lab’s records. This stage includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening denotes an immediate, preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly means to eliminate drug involvement for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for courtroom reliability. Samples suggesting positivity in Screening require subsequent verification.

If a sample suggests positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly diminished concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), signifying hair drug analysis as one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Validation of any positive screening result is implemented via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes examination per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and conformity to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing can reveal drug utilization extending up to 90 days, in contrast to urine testing, which has a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring accuracy in the results.
  • Yields historical insight: It can depict a timeline of drug utilization over several months, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be observable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in findings: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
