Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Poolesville, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug test or an alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in this field, with testing facilities available nationwide. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body suffices. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods increasingly feature the hair follicle test. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer this test over standard urine testing. Hair follicle tests are ideal for zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation scenarios. Their main advantage is an extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted through an observable collection that’s nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand, offering an extended history of substance usage. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Employ a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. Reference to head hair implies scalp hair only, while body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in processing a lab drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial integration of a sample into a lab system. This involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening mandate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumed positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are washed as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: Demonstrates a usage pattern over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", this analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
