Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Popes Creek, Maryland. If you require hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in this form of testing and operate centers across all U.S. cities to facilitate it. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. The tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and those in probation. Their key advantage is a longer drug detection window—up to 90 days—and the observed collection reduces cheating chances, though urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use, up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a lengthy timeline of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimum for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and for tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to assess the sample weight on a jeweler’s balance. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, the same quantity of body hair can be used. Scalp hair specifically denotes hair from the head, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s database. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for eliminating drug use in the majority of samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that yield a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further validation.

In the case of a presumptive positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair in much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug intake for as long as 90 days, compared to the shorter detection times of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a timeline of drug use rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variances such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Popes Creek, MD
The choice of hair over urine testing lies in its many advantages. Hair tests detect drug use over longer periods compared to urine tests, offering a more extensive look at an individual’s substance history. Not only does this enhance detection precision, but it also helps employers enforce robust drug-free policies.

Compared to urine tests, which may reflect drug use within a short frame, hair follicle testing provides a detailed drug use history over 90 days. This extended window reinforces detection accuracy and supports the stringent regulations often required by employers needing dependable drug testing measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
