Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Price, Maryland. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities across cities Nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Over the years, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug detection. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair tests over standard urine exams. Ideal for settings with strict drug policies, hair tests provide a longer detection window—up to 90 days—collected under supervision, making them hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the best choice for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has increasingly become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs extending up to about three months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which constitutes the optimal specimen for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other varieties of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test outcome in the laboratory encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system, covering the validation that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid test for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a low-cost option to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive screen result must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to falsify: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical information: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", these evaluations analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests provide a broader detection scope, identifying substance use from months ago. This makes them less prone to tampering, providing confident results for employers and authorities in Price, MD.

The long detection window of hair tests means they can uncover patterns of habitual misuse rather than isolated incidents. This capability gives organizations a more comprehensive insight compared to urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Price, MD, hair follicle testing is invaluable due to its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This long-term analysis offers employers a detailed overview of an individual's drug use history, providing insights that cannot be matched by tests with shorter detection periods.

For employers concerned with potential drug use, the extended monitoring capability of hair tests serves as a critical tool, enhancing the decision-making process with a thorough account of past behaviors.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Price, MD, stands out for its resistance to tampering. Unlike other methods susceptible to adulteration, hair testing's rigorous collection process ensures sample integrity, providing reliable results every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
