Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Riviera Beach, Maryland. Our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, with centers available in every city to conduct hair or alcohol tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body for these tests, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been included more frequently in drug screening protocols. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over urine ones. Employers enforcing strict no-drug-use rules, courts, or those on probation prefer this method due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days and the fact that it’s hard to manipulate. For evaluating recent drug use, urine tests remain effective.

What it is, How it works

Considered an effective method, hair testing has emerged as a potent way to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can chronicle prolonged histories of alcohol and drug presence by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp area, hair can offer detection capabilities for up to roughly a quarter of a year for alcohol and drug presence. It's straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the prime quantity for analysis and validation. For assessments like EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We advocate for precision by using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable mass of body hair may be used. The term "head hair" here specifically relates to scalp hair. "Body hair" designates other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four pivotal steps in the lab processing that yield a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial integration of a test sample into the laboratory's framework, confirming that the sample is both correctly sealed and transported, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing ancillary data entry if absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid investigation for substance abuse. Although cost-efficient for most samples in ruling out drug intake, positive screening results must be unequivocally verified for judicial acceptance. Samples showing presumptive positives during this phase require further validation.

Presumptively positive samples in the Screening phase lead to additional hair extraction from the original batch, preparing it for Extraction. Here, the drugs are isolated from hair at markedly lower concentrations, distinguishing this from alternatives like urine or oral fluid testing, thereby making hair drug testing the most complex method.

Every positive screening is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that indicate presumptive positivity are cleaned as needed before confirmation. Every phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug assessments can indicate usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Limited manipulation: Tampering with hair drug testing is notably challenging, offering higher reliability.
  • Tracks past consumption: It identifies usage patterns over time, beyond just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability for recent detection: Hair testing requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is pricier than other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
