In Rosedale, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether it's a drug or alcohol hair test you require, our expertise is unmatched, with centers across the nation ready to serve. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can check for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests are becoming favored in drug screening. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for this over traditional urine tests. Such tests are vital for employers with strict no-drug policies and those on probation. The advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, under observation, making it hard to counterfeit. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy timeline of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair denotes any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into the laboratory workflow. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any manual data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. While it is an economical way to identify drug usage for most samples, a positive result needs Confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most sophisticated process to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to cheating: It is quite hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Traces usage history: Demonstrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other methods, hair drug tests typically cost more.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence the level of drug markers in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine tests in Rosedale, MD due to its heightened accuracy and reliability in the detection of drugs. While urine tests often serve immediate detection needs, hair tests provide an extended timeline for reviewing personal drug use history, offering better insights compared to the short detection period of urine tests, where substances can quickly become undetectable.

Extended Detection Window

Rosedale, MD acknowledges the benefit of an extended detection window with hair follicle testing. Unlike traditional methods, hair tests capture drug usage up to 90 days prior, allowing employers to better evaluate an individual's past. This broader temporal window is invaluable for assessing consistent habits and informs many hiring and evaluative decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Rosedale, MD significantly minimizes the potential for sample tampering. The inherent characteristics of the testing process make it much more resistant to adulteration, providing more reliable results compared to urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
