Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs in Saint George Island, Maryland. For those needing drug or alcohol assessments via hair, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this method and provides services through nationwide centers. While approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is usually required from the scalp, body hair can also be tested. Hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various customized options.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over urine tests in recent years. A diverse range of clients including employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts, rely on hair drug testing. These tests are utilized by organizations with rigorous drug-free mandates, judicial entities, and those on probation. Key advantages of hair follicle testing include a significantly extended detection window, up to 90 days, under close observation, minimizing fraudulent results. Yet for identifying drug use within a recent five-day span, urine testing remains unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advocate weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. When we refer to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, but a positive screening must be verified to hold up in court. Samples that are initially positive during Screening must have a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often known as "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Saint George Island, MD, clearly surpasses urine tests with its superior detection capabilities and reliability. While urine tests have been traditionally used, hair tests provide a broader detection timeline and are less susceptible to manipulation. This gives employers and judicial bodies greater confidence in the results.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an extended detection window, hair follicle tests in Saint George Island, MD, cover drug use spanning up to 90 days. This longer timeframe delivers a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, aiding employers in making informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Saint George Island, MD, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant alternative to frequent testing methods. The collection process is conducted with stringent observation, making it nearly impossible to alter samples. This ensures the integrity of results, offering clear and unquestionable data every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
