At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Savage, Maryland. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we operate numerous centers across the nation capable of performing these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas is typically needed. Hair tests can help detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more commonplace in the realm of drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly favoring hair drug tests over urine tests. This method is preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers. The key advantage lies in its extended detection time, offering insights into drug usage up to 90 days prior. Despite this, urine tests still hold accuracy within a recent 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair provides an extended timeline of alcohol and drug history by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it offers approximately a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is logged into the laboratory system. This process includes verifying the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective means to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

When a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is completed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection span.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It establishes a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect current use: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Savage, MD, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests in many aspects. It provides superior detection accuracy and reliability, tracing drug use over an extended period, making it an invaluable tool for employers seeking a comprehensive view of a person’s drug history.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing minimizes the risk of false negatives, ensuring that drug use is accurately monitored, bringing a new level of trust and reliability to the testing process.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
