Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Scotland, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, turn to Accredited Drug Testing, which specializes in hair testing and has centers throughout every city nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. In most cases, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is necessary. Hair tests can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG or other bespoke hair testing choices.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over the typical urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probationary terms are key users of hair follicle drug testing. A principal advantage of this method is the extended detection window, allowing for up to 90 days of assessment, and conducted in an observed collection format, making it practically foolproof against manipulation. However, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection interval of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When referencing head hair, it pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex procedure to execute.

Any positive screening outcome undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to alter a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Yields historical data: This testing provides a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for detecting recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
