Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Silesia, Maryland. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair analysis, with facilities across all U.S. cities capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become part of drug screening methods. Numerous employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by entities with strict drug use policies, courts, and probationary frameworks. The key advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, under observed collection, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for drug detection in the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust solution for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 90-day detection span for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to acquire, tough to falsify, and straightforward to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, produces 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG appendages, and/or assessments above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When specifying head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s framework. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for narcotics. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive outcome in Screening must be corroborated to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is assumed positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and set for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a noticeably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is what makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and validation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection interval.
  • Difficult to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historic information: It can depict a usage pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
