Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Simpsonville, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair assessments and operate testing centers across cities Nationwide capable of performing hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body suffices. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance detection. This test is often favored by employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine testing. It's especially valued by employers with strict anti-drug policies, the courts, and individuals on probation. The substantial advantage of this method is its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it virtually fraud-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as a potent method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When extracted near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use over approximately a three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal volume of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we denote only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system, which involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug substances. Although it provides a cost-efficient way to eliminate most samples as negative, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legal in court. Samples indicating potential positivity in Screening mandate further validation.

Upon preliminary positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. This phase involves drug extraction from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing more complex.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are washed as needed. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair analysis can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, providing more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair testing is generally costlier than other methods.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite levels in hair can fluctuate due to factors such as hair color and individual growth discrepancies.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
