Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Snow Hill, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or a similar length on the body. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now require hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. This method suits employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court cases, and probation scenarios. A significant advantage is a much longer timeframe for detecting drug use, generally up to 90 days, through an observed collection process, making it extremely hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers over a long period within their fibers as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch specimen consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift examination for drug usage. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, positive screenings need confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation, as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing is Superior in Snow Hill, MD

  • Hair follicle tests offer extended detection periods compared to urine tests, ensuring no recent drug use is overlooked.
  • Urine tests may miss occasional use, while hair testing captures a comprehensive overview of drug history.
  • Unlike urine samples, hair testing is difficult to tamper with, providing results with higher reliability and security.

The advantages of hair testing in Snow Hill, MD, over traditional urine tests lie in its enhanced accuracy and security. Employers trust hair testing more due to its ability to detect a wide range of substances over longer durations.

Extended Detection Window

In Snow Hill, MD, hair follicle testing offers a prolonged detection window, going back as far as 90 days, which is particularly beneficial for employers aiming to understand an applicant’s substance history.
Unlike other tests, it provides an in-depth overview, ensuring any substance use is thoroughly identified, even if it occurred weeks ago. This extensive detection period allows employers a comprehensive insight into the individual's lifestyle.

Employers love the 90-day detection window of hair follicle tests for a more accurate assessment of long-term substance habits. By observing drug use over such an extended period, employers gain a clearer understanding of the candidate's long-term behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Snow Hill, MD, hair follicle tests are renowned for their resistance to tampering, offering an unmatched level of sample integrity. Hair samples, unlike others, are collected under stringent protocols, reducing the likelihood of adulteration or substitution.
Employers can trust the results, knowing they reflect genuine and untampered samples.

This testing method significantly mitigates the risk of sample contamination, ensuring that results are indisputable and reliable. Such tamper-resistant features make hair follicle tests the preferred choice for those prioritizing accuracy and reliability in their drug testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
