Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Spring Ridge, Maryland. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers in every city Nationwide ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the crown of your head or other body parts. Hair analysis can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted for drug detection. Businesses, judicial systems, and addiction specialists favor hair tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle tests serve employers with strict anti-drug policies and those under judicial scrutiny, offering a detection period extending up to 90 days, with supervised collection and minimal susceptibility to cheating. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most effective for recent drug use identification within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, it can offer approximately a three-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of about 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides around 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample's initial processing into the lab's system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for abuse substances. While cost-effective for ruling out positive drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows historical trends: Provides insight into drug usage over time, rather than recent consumption only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
