Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in St. Charles, Maryland. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers available across all cities Nationwide to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or from the body can be used. Our hair tests can screen for substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing plans.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for a hair drug test as opposed to the standard urine test. Employers who enforce strict no-drug tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals favor hair follicle tests for their extended detection period of drug use—up to 90 days, conducted under direct supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures biomarkers within the fibers of hair strands as they grow, offering a historical footprint of substance usage. When gathered near the scalp, this type of test can provide a detection period extending up to roughly three months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is less feasible, and it facilitates easy shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For more detailed tests, such as EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding ten, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into the laboratory's workflow. It includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) at random, and completing any additional information entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening initiates a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to evaluate the majority of samples for drug use, positive results from this step require confirmation to be considered valid in legal settings. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples indicated as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample set and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations than those found in alternative approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology to execute.

Positive results from the Screening phase are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples labeled as presumptively positive undergo a wash before moving to Confirmation as required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days preceding, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe for detection.
  • Difficult to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: Hair testing identifies habitual drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent drug intake: A timeframe of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be impacted by factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Although occasionally referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in St. Charles, MD, reveals numerous benefits. Hair tests demonstrate superior detection accuracy and reliability, capturing a more profound history of substance use. Unlike urine tests, hairs can retain historical substance use information for up to 90 days, providing a broader overview. This comprehensive detection makes it difficult for offenders to evade detection, securing workplace integrity.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing in St. Charles, MD, stands at up to 90 days, showcasing a significant advantage. This period gives employers a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's substance history. Through longer detection capabilities, companies obtain a robust picture, helping them make informed hiring decisions by avoiding potential risks associated with recent or past drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
