In Stevensville, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair testing, our centers are located in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. These tests can detect various substances, including drugs and alcohol, along with customized testing options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often require these tests rather than traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies due to their longer detection period—up to 90 days, making them hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain more accurate for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a robust mechanism for identifying the consumption of substances like drugs and alcohol. The strands of hair encapsulate markers of substances over time, providing a historical record. When collected from near the scalp, hair delivers an insightful detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. The procedure for collecting hair samples is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated for shipping.

A 1.5-inch strand of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp offers around 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For evaluations like EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be procured. The term "head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Procedure Overview

The principal stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within a lab’s system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data that's not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift inspection for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective strategy to negate drug use in the majority of samples, any positive identifications require confirmation to be viable in legal contexts. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are sourced from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging techniques to conduct.

Any positive result in screening is validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples that test positive are washed as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review adhering to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug assessments:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can determine drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • Resistance to deception: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Illustrates historical usage: It reveals a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent drug use.

Constraints:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal growth differences can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
