Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Still Pond, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair or body hair is required. We provide testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options using hair samples.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence over urine tests for drug screening. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests. This method is ideal for employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationers due to its longer detection window, around 90 days, and reliability. Nonetheless, urine tests remain best for detecting use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to about 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in diameter) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for analysis. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or panels above 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry and processing of a sample in the laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry needed beyond an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial examination checking for drug use. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that test positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair testing one of the most challenging methods to perform.

Positive screening results are confirmed by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which identify a shorter period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, which results in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical data: It provides insights into patterns of drug use over time instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent use: Detection in hair takes 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentrations can be affected by hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
