Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Sunnybrook, Maryland. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair tests, our centers span nationwide, ensuring convenient access for anyone needing these services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or other body areas can be analyzed to detect drugs, alcohol, or tailored testing protocols.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug detection, standing in for traditional urine tests required by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Hair tests are favored by organizations with stringent drug-free policies as they offer a detection period of up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are resistant to tampering, offering a more reliable overview compared to urine tests, which are more accurate for recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a potent resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen weight is suggested. If scalp hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of concern. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method for negating drug usage in most samples, a positive result from a screen requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is pulled from the primary specimen and prepared for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is finalized using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and authenticated to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with more limited detection durations.
  • Resilient to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring higher accuracy in results.
  • Offers chronological data: It indicates drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become visible in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Influences such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the follicle found under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers numerous advantages over urine drug testing in Sunnybrook, MD. One of the most significant benefits is the enhanced detection accuracy, as hair follicle tests provide a broader insight into an individual's drug usage history. While urine tests cover a shorter window, hair tests offer a comprehensive detection period.

Moreover, hair testing is more reliable than urine tests because it negates the likelihood of tampering. These tests also embody an observed collection process, ensuring honest and consistent results, making them a superior choice for various entities.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Sunnybrook, MD, sets it apart from other drug testing methods. By covering up to 90 days of substance use, this test grants employers insight into a prolonged period, allowing a broader understanding of an individual's past substance choices.

This comprehensive detection capability is invaluable, offering employers a lens into an applicant or employee's past, aiding in informed decision-making. This extensive window helps promote safety and clarity within workplace environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug tests in Sunnybrook, MD, present a robust defense against tampering with sample integrity. Unlike other testing methods, its tamper-resistant nature ensures the reliability of results. The collection method curtails the possibility of sample alteration, maintaining the authenticity crucial for decision-making.

The inherent resistance of hair samples to manipulation underscores why many organizations prefer this screening method. As a trusted approach, hair testing assures stakeholders of the veracity of the data obtained, fostering confidence in the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
