Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in Templeville, Maryland. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in such tests and offer facilities in all cities Nationwide. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body, hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly feature hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor them over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and probationary personnel benefit from hair testing's extended detection period, up to 90 days. This observed collection is difficult to manipulate. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use within an approximate three-month framework. The process of hair collection is straightforward, challenging to manipulate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in width) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is an optimal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a suggested amount of 150mg is needed. It's advisable to gauge the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. The term head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing drug test samples in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's framework. This step verifies sample integrity upon sealing and shipment, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not facilitated through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary review for substances. This method is economical for negating drugs in most samples; however, a preliminary positive necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any specimens indicating a presumptive positive from Screening need a secondary validation.

When a specimen shows a presumptive positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, the concentration of drugs is retrieved from hair at levels lower than alternative methods, such as urine or saliva, thus rendering hair drug testing as the most intricate methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive Screening outcomes. Every presumptive positive subset is cleaned before Confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory protocol, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation measures.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can disclose drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection period.
  • Minimal chances of deception: The complexity of cheating on a hair drug test results in more credible outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It unveils a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just indicating recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings generally incur greater costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth diversity might impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination pertains to the hair itself, excluding the follicle at the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing the benefits of hair follicle tests against traditional urine tests in Templeville, MD, the former outshines in detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
