Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Trappe, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing across all cities nationwide using our testing centers equipped to conduct hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests are applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a favored method for conducting drug tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation applications utilize hair follicle testing. The main advantage is the extended detection timeframe of drug use, typically up to 90 days, in a directly observed collection. It is nearly cheat-proof, yet for detecting very recent drug use (within last 5 days), urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and various substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When clipped at the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, tampering is challenging, and it is straightforward to send by mail.

An ideal sample comprises a 1.5-inch length of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil width) near the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair, optimal for testing. For EtG and advanced tests beyond 10-panel, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to verify the specimen's weight. Should there be a lack of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifies scalp hair only, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug test results consists of four primary procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning step processes a sample initially into the laboratory's system. Tasks include ensuring the sample's secure sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary information not covered by electronic custody systems.

The Screening phase provides a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although it is an economically efficient method for ruling out drug use in most specimens, positive screening outcomes must be verified for legal validity. Any presumptive positive samples at the Screening stage necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other approaches (e.g., urine or saliva tests), explaining why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

For Verification of any positive screening results, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Unlike urine tests, hair drug testing can reveal drug usage up to 90 days prior.
  • Challenging to fake: The accuracy of hair drug tests is enhanced by being hard to tamper with.
  • Delivers historical patterns: Offers an account of drug consumption trends over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't identify very recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternatives.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests," this method actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
