At Accredited Drug Testing, comprehensive hair follicle drug tests are available in Tyaskin, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with centers across the nation ready to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Employers, judiciary, and substance abuse experts increasingly demand hair tests over traditional urine analysis. This method is preferred by those with zero-tolerance policies, such as employers, courts, and probationary services. Hair tests offer a longer detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, for identifying recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has gained recognition as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to nearly three months of alcohol and drug usage history. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch-length sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, extended panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommended 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair might be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a lab’s system. This includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, but a positive screen must be verified to be admissible legally. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much finer concentration than through other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab work from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter span of detection.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy of outcomes.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can exhibit a pattern of substance use over time, surpassing only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent ingestion: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug indicators within the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tyaskin, MD, comparing hair follicle testing against traditional urine tests reveals a definitive advantage. Hair testing identifies drug usage over much longer periods, enhancing its accuracy and reliability. With urine tests covering a limited timeframe, hair analysis triumphs as the superior method sought by employers and professionals alike.

When it comes to detection, hair testing delivers high-fidelity insights that urine tests can't match. The broader detection window of hair testing provides a more comprehensive review, illustrating its indispensable role in contemporary substance screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window that reaches up to 90 days in Tyaskin, MD. This method provides a fuller picture of an individual's substance use history, surpassing standard screening options. It's an invaluable asset for employers seeking an applicant's long-term compliance and substance history.

By employing a comprehensive approach, hair follicle testing allows employers to make informed hiring decisions. This extended view is pivotal in maintaining safety standards, offering unmatched insights compared to other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Tyaskin, MD, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests dramatically reduces the risk of sample adulteration. Such testing offers reliable, credible results that withstand manipulation attempts, standing as a true reflection of substance use history.

By minimizing the chance for false negatives or compromised samples, hair testing ensures unquestionable results. This high level of integrity makes it a preferred choice for those seeking the most accurate portrayal of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
