Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Vienna, Maryland. Should you require drug or alcohol testing through hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert source with facilities in every city nationwide equipped for hair assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair tests may also be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specialized testing requirements.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent approach for substance analysis. Hair tests are increasingly being mandated by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, differentiated from traditional urine tests. Employers with no-tolerance drug policies, as well as legal and probationary authorities, rely on hair follicle testing. The key advantage of this method is its extended drug detection timeframe which reaches up to 90 days. Collected under direct supervision, it's extremely resistant to tampering. Yet, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history by capturing biomarkers in the composition of the growing hair. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal a detection period for drugs and alcohol of up to around 3 months. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to alter, and convenient to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. When scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair exclusively, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any presumptively positive samples during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), marking hair drug testing as the most complex methodology.

For confirming any positive Screening outcomes, techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized. Prior to confirmation, any presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are quite difficult to tamper with, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: They provide a record of drug use over time, instead of only recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to surface in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Variation in outcomes: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While the term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Vienna, MD

Hair follicle testing is markedly superior to traditional urine tests in numerous ways. Unlike urine tests, hair tests in Vienna, MD offer an extended detection window that reaches up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
