Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in White Crystal Beach, Maryland. Whether you need hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with nationwide centers ready to administer tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. These analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other tailored options.

Drug testing methods have increasingly favored the hair follicle approach in recent years. This alternative is being preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Ideal for workplaces with strict anti-drug policies, legal settings, and probation scenarios, the hair follicle test's advantage lies in its longer detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. Still, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's structure as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the material is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advised. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair, on the other hand, encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to evade: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing often surpass traditional urine testing in White Crystal Beach, MD. Hair tests track drug use over a more extended period, providing superior detection accuracy. As urine tests typically detect recent use, they may miss long-term patterns detectable through hair analysis, offering employers a more comprehensive view of substance use.

Reliable Detection
Employers benefit from the reliability of hair follicle tests, as these assessments endure tampering efforts more effectively compared to urine tests. The longer detection period and observed collection method significantly increase reliability and accuracy, reinforcing their preference in many professional settings.

Extended Detection Window

An extended detection window is vital for thorough evaluations in White Crystal Beach, MD. Hair follicle tests can determine drug use over 90 days, offering employers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. This expansive period is unmatched by traditional urine tests, providing a broader perspective on potential substance abuse patterns.

Comprehensive Analysis
Employers gain valuable insights into an applicant's or employee's behavior over months, rather than weeks or days. This extended window allows for informed decisions when considering employment or monitoring existing employees, ensuring a safer and compliant workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests provide a tamper-resistant method in White Crystal Beach, MD, crucial for ensuring accurate results. These tests significantly reduce the risk of adulteration, offering reliable and indisputable outcomes. The observed collection process further guards against manipulations, preserving test integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
