With Accredited Drug Testing, residents of White Hall, Maryland, have access to comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it's for hair or alcohol testing, the company excels in hair analysis and offers numerous testing centers Nationwide. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or additional specialized tests.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. This is especially relevant for companies with strict no-drug policies, judicial needs, and probationers. The standout feature of hair follicle tests is their extended detection, revealing substance use as far back as 90 days through observed collection, which makes tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests still hold the edge for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month retrospective window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to dispatch.

An ideal screening and confirmation require a 1.5-inch sample of about 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to gauge the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportional amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The four primary phases in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the sample's entry into a laboratory’s system. This phase involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening entails an initial swift evaluation for misuse of drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive indication requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair tests the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any suspect positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analyses can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug consumption over time rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair analyses typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over urine tests in White Hall, MD. With superior detection accuracy, these tests provide more reliable results, identifying drug use with precision. Hair testing is unmatched in its ability to detect substances over a longer timeframe.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
