In Whitehaven, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. With specialized expertise in this area, we operate testing centers nationwide to accommodate your hair or alcohol testing needs. Typically, a sample length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body hair can be used. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent over recent years. Today, a significant number of employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This preference stems from hair tests being adopted in workplaces with strict drug policies, as well as courts and probation settings. The primary advantage lies in the extended detection window of up to 90 days and the secure collection process, making them almost foolproof. For recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a pivotal method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair acts as a timeline for alcohol and drug history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When hair is cut near the scalp, it presents a detection range for up to around 3 months for alcohol and drug identification. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp makes up 100mg of hair, which is perfect for preliminary testing and subsequent verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests above 10 panels, it's advised to obtain 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. Head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result at the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample entering a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary swift assessment for abused substances. It is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, but a positive outcome requires confirmation to be viable in legal contexts. Any samples flagged as presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further validation.

For specimens flagged as potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than what other testing methods (like urine or oral fluid) require, making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Verification of any positive screening result is implemented through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples initially indicated as positive are cleaned before verification if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insight into drug consumption patterns over time instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A delay of about 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are more costly than other drug assessment methodologies.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can affect drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation itself is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine tests in Whitehaven, MD, reveals notable advantages. Hair testing surpasses urine tests with superior detection accuracy, offering a reliable account of an individual's substance history over an extended period. This qualitative edge makes hair testing indispensable for employers seeking robust and reliable results.

Employers in Whitehaven benefit from choosing hair follicle tests over urine tests due to the enhanced detection capabilities. The broader surveillance timeframe provided by hair testing allows for a more comprehensive view of substance usage, curbing the limitations seen in urine-based testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of tests conducted in Whitehaven, MD, provides a comprehensive view of substance use history over a broad period, typically up to 90 days. This extended horizon allows employers to verify applicants or employees' histories, making hair follicle testing an ideal choice for informed decision-making.

For employers aiming to understand an employee's substance use history, the trailing 90-day detection window of hair follicle tests offers extensive insight. Such an approach enhances transparency and ensures that insufficient data does not compromise safety and compliance in Whitehaven workplaces.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Whitehaven, MD, the hair follicle test is a tamper-resistant method that significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration. This reliability makes it an excellent choice for businesses that seek unquestionable results, ensuring that all samples accurately reflect an individual's substance use without the risk of cheating or manipulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
