Accredited Drug Testing delivers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Woodstock, Maryland. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with testing facilities available nationwide in every city capable of administering a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, either from the head's crown or another body part. Hair tests can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been adopted for substance testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation rely on these tests. A key advantage of hair drug tests is their extensive detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation and making it almost impossible to tamper with. Yet, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a remarkable resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat hard to alter, and simple to send.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, containing around 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional add-ons, and/or testing on more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested that the specimen be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial phase where a sample is introduced into a laboratory system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening uses an initial rapid test for banned substances. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs verification to be valid in court. Any samples that return a presumptive positive during Screening will require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more strands are separated from the initial specimen to prepare for Extraction. During this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive outcome in the screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliant with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more restricted detection period.
  • Difficult to evade: It is notably tough to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Gives historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over time instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and differences in individual hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
