Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Acton, Massachusetts. If you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with centers nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown is required, or body hair may be used. Hair analyses can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are favoring hair testing over urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and probation officers utilize hair tests. The main advantage over other methods is the longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection that is highly resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain the better option for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective instrument for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair, it provides an extended timeline of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to a 3-month period. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

An ideal sample for screening and confirmation consists of a 1.5-inch piece comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is suggested that the sample be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in processing drug test outcomes in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample enters a laboratory's system. This process includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method for mostly ruling out drug usage, any positive result from Screening has to be confirmed for it to be admissible in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can determine substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Cheating is challenging: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It provides patterns of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Acton, MA, hair follicle testing stands as a superior alternative to traditional urine tests. It offers enhanced detection with a longer window, eclipsing urine tests' typical timeframe. Hair studies reveal substance use over months, making it reliable and difficult to circumvent. Hence, those prioritizing accuracy and reliability often choose hair follicle testing over conventional methods.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Acton, MA offers an extended period of detection, up to 90 days, providing employers insight into an individual's historical substance use patterns. While urine tests reveal only recent usage, hair testing reveals prolonged behavioral trends, thus offering a more comprehensive view into one's past substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Acton, MA, hair follicle tests offer a formidable defense against tampering. Significantly reducing adulteration risk, these tests ensure results remain unchallenged. In a world where sample integrity is crucial, hair testing offers an uncompromisable standard for substance use results that cannot be easily altered.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
