Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Belchertown, Massachusetts. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this area, with facilities nationwide that can conduct these tests. You'll need about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, which can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

The trend in drug testing has shifted towards the use of hair follicle tests in recent years. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are now favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are employed by organizations with strict no-drug-use policies, the judiciary system, and probationary programs. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their ability to detect drug use over an extended period—up to 90 days—in an observed process, which makes them highly tamper-resistant. However, for detection of recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a comprehensive history of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair may reveal up to a 90-day period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is easy, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), and taken closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for testing and verification. For tests involving EtG, extras, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is first incorporated into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase is a preliminary assessment to identify potential drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means of eliminating drug use in most cases, any positive screen must be verified to be valid in a legal context. Samples with positive indications in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show positive signs in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction stage. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Any positive findings from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation, if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Due to the difficulty in evading a hair drug test, the results tend to be more reliable.
  • Historical insights: Hair tests can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle residing beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Belchertown, MA, hair follicle testing has become a go-to choice over urine tests. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy, capturing a wider timeframe of drug usage. While urine tests only cover recent use, hair follicle tests provide longer detection windows, thus making them a preferred option for many employers aiming for a comprehensive understanding of drug history.

Extended Detection Window

One standout feature of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window in Belchertown, MA. This method can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, offering employers a more comprehensive picture of a candidate's substance use over time. For both pre-employment screenings and ongoing staff checks, hair tests present invaluable insights into an individual's history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant method of drug testing in Belchertown, MA. The stringent processes involved make it difficult for individuals to manipulate results, ensuring that employers and legal authorities receive reliable and unquestionable outcomes. This high level of security enhances the credibility of hair-based drug tests significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
