Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dover, Massachusetts. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol screening, we excel in this area and have centers Nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests effectively. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head or elsewhere can be used. Hair tests are versatile, analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction as a prevalent method for drug screening. More employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are turning to hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers are frequent users. The key advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days, through observed collection, and their high resistance to tampering. However, for detecting very recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can furnish a detection timeframe of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. In cases requiring EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory's system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, swift evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use suspicion for most samples, any positive result necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing an extremely challenging technique.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a limited detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug testing is hard to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers usage patterns: It provides an overview of drug consumption trends over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs generally take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher expenses than alternative testing methods.
  • Results variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
