Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Dunstable, Massachusetts. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair sampling is unmatched, with facilities available across all U.S. cities. Generally, hair from the head’s crown or body must measure between 1.5 to 2 inches. Tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become increasingly prevalent in drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often favor this method over traditional urine analysis. This test is particularly preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The major advantage lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, along with its secure collection process, making it notoriously difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. The reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial processing within a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be considered admissible in court. Any samples initially positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Challenges in deception: Manipulating a hair drug test is remarkably difficult, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It can showcase a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
