Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Eastham, Massachusetts. Specializing in hair testing nationwide, we cater to those needing hair or alcohol tests. Our centers can conduct hair analysis with 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the head or body. Testing can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as per needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for drug screening. It's now favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. It's ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, court mandates, and probation requirements. Key advantages include a 90-day detection period, observed sample collection, and reduced cheating risk. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug ingestion by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair has the potential to reveal alcohol and drug usage over nearly a 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or examinations that exceed 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable volume of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses alternative types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The process for analyzing drug test results in a laboratory encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry that an electronic chain of custody system did not cover.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples yielding presumptive positive results in Screening require subsequent verification.

If a sample returns presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations from hair compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex methodology.

All positive screenings undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive results are washed if necessary before Confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: Offers a pattern analysis of drug usage over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually more costly compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations such as hair color and personal growth rates may impact drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
