Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Fort Devens, MA. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise in hair testing connects you with centers in every U.S. city. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other individualized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method in drug testing. They are increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judicial system, and probation officers utilize hair tests because they offer an extended detection period of up to 90 days, are performed in a supervised setting, and are hard to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands retain biomarkers over time, offering an extended record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a span of about three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair snippet, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is the advised quantity. We suggest verifying the weight of the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into the lab’s database. This process includes confirming that the sample package was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information in the absence of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances. This approach is cost-efficient for ruling out drug consumption in most samples, but a positive screening result necessitates affirmation to be viable in legal contexts. Any samples with positive Screening results need further confirmation.

If a sample has a positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a lower level compared to other testing methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a more complex process.

Confirmed positive results undergo further validation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Pre-confirmation, all samples are cleaned when necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored, adhering to CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, which is longer than the detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: The difficulty to circumvent hair testing enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Reflects usage patterns: It reveals the history of drug use over a timeline, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detectable drug presence in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests usually cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite common references to "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Leads in Fort Devens, MA: Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior accuracy in drug detection. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
