In Greenfield, Massachusetts, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our centers nationwide, including all cities, can conduct these specialized tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required for analysis. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances as requested.

Increasingly, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug detection. This shift is driven by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opting for hair over urine tests. Hair drug tests align with zero-tolerance policies, are used in legal settings and probation monitoring. They offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days and are resistant to tampering, although urine tests remain best for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying substance use. Hair offers a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing biomarkers within the strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 90-day timeframe for drug and alcohol detection. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 stands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the ideal amount for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair might be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial phase of entering a sample into a lab's system. This entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening constitutes an initial swift test for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug consumption in most specimens, a positive result from the screen must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptively positive outcome during the Screening process, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug analysis the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to inspection under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly unlikely, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Substances become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternate testing methods.
  • Variances in results: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
