Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hamilton, Massachusetts, Accredited Drug Testing excels in administering drug and alcohol hair tests, with facilities available across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are necessary for an effective analysis. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing requirements.

Hair follicle testing has steadily become more prevalent in drug testing practices recently. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over traditional urine assessments. Businesses enforcing strict drug policies, probation cases, and legal proceedings frequently utilize hair tests. Their significant advantage lies in their extended drug detection period, up to 90 days, collected in an observed setting, making them extremely difficult to deceive. Nonetheless, urine tests still remain the gold standard for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. Obtaining hair near the scalp allows for detection up to around a three-month span for alcohol and other substances. Collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg collection is advisable. We suggest assessing the sample mass using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unattainable, collecting a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core procedures in lab processing for drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial integration of a specimen into the lab’s workflow. This process verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. Despite being an economical approach to eliminate drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen needs further confirmation to be admissible legally. Specimens with presumptive positive results in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a specimen shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this step, drugs are drawn from hair at lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests detect drug usage over a shorter period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug evaluations are hard to manipulate, enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Shows historical patterns: These tests can indicate patterns of drug uptake over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are usually pricier than other test procedures.
  • Result variabilities: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
