Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Hanson, Massachusetts. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair analyses at centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for most cases. Substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom tests can be detected via hair analysis.

In recent years, the preference for hair follicle drug testing over traditional methods has increased. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often choose hair analysis over standard urine tests. Hair tests benefit employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies and provide a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days. However, for the detection of recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a lengthy timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a three-month observation period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to deliver.

A 1.5-inch lock from approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair covers all other hair types including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial management of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary investigation for substance abuse. Screening is a cost-effective approach to rule out drug use for the majority of samples; however, a positive screening must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require additional Confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is harvested from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can capture instances of drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test results is quite difficult, resulting in highly accurate outcomes.
  • Offers retrospective data: It reflects a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables including hair color and individual growth differences may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

In Hanson, MA, hair follicle testing significantly surpasses urine testing in efficiency. Superior Detection Accuracy: Hair tests offer a broader detection window, making them more reliable for identifying substance use over time. Reliability: With hair follicle testing, the likelihood of achieving accurate and consistent results is much higher when compared to urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Hanson, MA, hair follicle testing provides an extensive detection window, allowing up to 90 days of drug use history to be examined. Comprehensive Insight: Such a broad timeframe gives employers an insightful understanding of an individual’s substance use habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
