In Harvard, Massachusetts, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analysis with facilities available nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is sufficient. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing variants.

The prevalent shift towards hair follicle drug testing has become notable among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. This method supersedes the traditional urine test, particularly for organizations with strict no-drug policies, probationary cases, or legal systems. The significant advantage is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, combined with a monitored collection process that virtually eliminates tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a detailed history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal use over a period of up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the best sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of incorporating a sample into the lab's system. It involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be viable in court. Samples that test positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If the Screening identifies a sample as presumptively positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a comparatively lower concentration than other methods (i.e., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a short detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It's quite hard to manipulate a hair drug test, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot pinpoint recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detected in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, excluding the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Benefits of Hair Testing over urine tests are gaining recognition in Harvard, MA. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing provides superior detection accuracy. It reliably identifies substance use even months after the fact.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
