Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hatfield, Massachusetts. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is adept at hair examinations and maintains testing centers across all cities in the Nation capable of executing such tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required in most scenarios. Assessments can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing increasingly incorporates the hair follicle method. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests in lieu of traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle tests are preferred by organizations with strict drug use policies, legal bodies, and probationary individuals. A chief advantage is the extended detection duration of drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, and is virtually foolproof. For use indications within a recent 5-day period, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an efficient method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of close to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within the laboratory’s system. This step verifies the sample's seal and appropriate shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial screening for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be court-admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If the Screening stage result is presumptively positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive results from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to the confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify substance use up to 90 days versus shorter periods for urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, leading to more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage history: It shows a user's drug consumption pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer as it examines the hair strand itself rather than the hair follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
