Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ipswich, MA. Specializing in hair tests, our centers across all U.S. cities are equipped for this type of testing. You need at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair testing can analyze substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with other options for personalized testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in drug testing protocols. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing, favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation programs, offers the key benefit of detecting drug use up to 90 days, is conducted under observation, and is hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the most recent 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands provide a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it offers a detection duration of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there's no scalp hair available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Note that "head hair" specifies scalp hair only, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory’s system. This entails checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it provides a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use suspicions for most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are initially found positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for the Extraction stage. In this step, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that initially test positive undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The end-to-end laboratory method from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug intake for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection timeline.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's immensely challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug use patterns over a time frame rather than just recent drug intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concentrates on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
