Situated in Islington, Massachusetts, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair assessments, we operate facilities in cities across the nation, performing these tests with expertise. For accurate results, ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available; body hair can also be utilized in some cases. Our tests include drug, alcohol/ETG, or specific hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have evolved with hair follicle tests gaining popularity. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair tests are favored for their extensive detection period of up to 90 days, utilizing an observed collection process that is nearly cheat-proof. For detecting drug use within the last 5 days, however, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly considered an effective method for tracing drug and alcohol usage. It provides an in-depth timeline of substance consumption by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, this hair can reveal up to a three-month detection span for both alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. In cases of EtG, added tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's beneficial to use a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen weight measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test consists of four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory step, where a sample is integrated into the lab's system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data input not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drug abuse. While efficient in dismissing drug usage for most samples, a positive result during Screening needs verification to hold up in legal settings. Consequently, any samples with presumptive positive results require further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate potential drug presence in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening compared to other methodologies.

Any positive screening results are verified through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a cleaning process as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical pattern: It provides evidence of ongoing drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier when compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The Superiority of Hair Follicle Testing Over Urine Testing in Islington, MA - Hair follicle tests outshine traditional urine tests by offering extensive detection windows and enhanced reliability. With an ability to track substance use over a longer period, these tests provide a clearer picture than urine tests, which have a much shorter detection window.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
