Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Lancaster, Massachusetts. For those in need of alcohol or drug evaluations using hair samples, our expertise lies in hair assessments, with access to facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored options.

In recent developments, hair follicle testing has increasingly supplanted standard urine tests in drug screenings. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor hair samples due to their extended detection capabilities. This testing method is integral for employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation scenarios. Hair testing's advantage lies in its 90-day detection timeframe and its resistance to tampering, though urine remains superior for recent use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective tool for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a drug test result in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing into a lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening highly challenging to conduct.

Confirming any positive Screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Necessary washing is performed on all presumptive positive samples before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical use: These tests can illustrate drug use patterns over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the scalp’s hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Among the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Lancaster, MA, is its unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer an insight beyond the short detection window that urine tests provide, capturing a broader history of substance usage, up to 90 days, hence yielding more comprehensive insights.

While urine tests are common, hair follicle testing proves superior in numerous aspects. Its advantages include a longer detection window and resistance to tampering, providing a clearer picture of someone's substance history than a urine test possibly could, making it the preferred choice for many organizations.

Extended Detection Window

One compelling reason for choosing hair follicle testing in Lancaster, MA, is its extended detection window. This method can uncover drug use from as far back as 90 days, offering a thorough overview of an individual's substance consumption. Employers can gain deeper insights into an individual's history, making informed decisions thanks to these extensive timelines.

This prolonged detection period ensures that employers are well-informed about any habitual substance use, thus safeguarding their interests. The lengthy timeline that hair follicle tests offer captures months of data, standing as a more comprehensive investigative tool compared to other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The strength of hair follicle testing in Lancaster, MA, lies in its exceptional tamper-resistant characteristics. With potential sample adulteration effectively minimized, the reliability of results remains intact and definitive, providing clear insights without the risk of tampered samples compromising the outcome.

This testing method mitigates risks of manipulation, making it a trusted tool in critical environments. By significantly reducing the chance of sample adulteration, hair follicle tests ensure that results are not only reliable but also trustworthy, reinforcing their status as a robust option.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
