Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lee, Massachusetts. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with locations across all cities Nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customizable testing options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine tests. Suitable for zero-tolerance drug policies, probation monitoring, and court requirements, the key advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their longer detection period—up to 90 days—collected under observation and nearly foolproof. However, for drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain unbeaten in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline for the use of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can provide up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hairs (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample weighing 150 mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp cannot be acquired, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. On the other hand, body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab management of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is logged into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that the electronic tracking system did not cover.

Screening presents an initial rapid assessment for prohibited substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to eliminate the likelihood of drug use in most cases, a positive screening must be validated to be legally recognized. Any samples marked as presumptively positive during Screening require secondary validation.

If a sample seems positive during the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other practices (like urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair testing is among the most challenging techniques to conduct.

Validation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any suspected positive samples are cleaned before validation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: Hair testing can provide a timeline of drug use over several weeks, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting current use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variety in outcomes: Elements such as hair shading and individual diversities in hair growth could affect the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
