Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Mashpee, Massachusetts. Should you require a drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair analysis, with facilities in all cities Nationwide capable of handling such tests. Generally, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body is necessary. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are employed by workplaces with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation programs. A significant advantage is a prolonged detection span for drug usage, usually up to 90 days, making it hard to deceive, while still urine tests provide precise results for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. To test for EtG, additional panels, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When talking about head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the first stage of a sample's processing into a lab's system. This consists of confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most rigorous method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is completed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Maneuvering around a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Yields historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following usage.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself focuses on analyzing the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Mashpee, MA

When it comes to superior detection accuracy and reliability, hair follicle testing holds a significant advantage over traditional urine tests. Hair testing allows for the revelation of drug consumption over a protracted period, offering a more complete picture of an individual's history. Moreover, the chance of manipulation is substantially lower compared to urine tests, enhancing overall test reliability.

Hair tests avoid the common pitfalls of urine tests that can be easily manipulated or produce false negatives. With their advanced accuracy, hair follicle testing in Mashpee, MA provides a more conclusive methodology for discerning substance use, fostering superior detection mechanisms.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
