Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mendon, Massachusetts. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair analysis and nationwide testing centers ensures that you receive a reliable test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has become increasingly popular for drug testing processes. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are chosen by employers with strict drug-free policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. They offer a key advantage: extended detection of drug use, typically up to 90 days, under supervised conditions, and are almost impossible to manipulate. However, for detection of recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling has become recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers an extended-term overview of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month timeframe of alcohol and drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory's framework. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit substances. While Screening is an economical method for ruling out drug usage in most specimens, a positive result necessitates confirmation to hold up in court. All specimens that are tentatively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations which offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to falsify: Falsifying hair drug evaluations is quite challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can indicate patterns of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
