Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Merrimac, Massachusetts. Whether you're in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on this method, boasting testing facilities in numerous cities Nationwide adept at conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Over recent years, the hair follicle drug testing method has increasingly become a staple for drug testing. Various employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the typical urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free mandates, courts, and those on probation often use hair follicle tests. They offer a longer drug detection period, reaching up to 90 days, in an observed collection process, making them nearly tamper-proof. Conversely, for substance use detection within the past 5 days, urine testing remains most reliable.

What it is, How it works

An effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption is hair testing. Hair captures a long-term account of substances and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it allows an approximate detection duration of three months for substances and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, making it somewhat resistant to tampering and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of around 200 strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is preferable. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair can't be acquired, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" covers other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This involves checking if the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, speedy assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is mandatory for court acceptability. Samples that test positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives undergo washing as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in light of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can capture drug use for up to three months, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Tough to falsify: It's particularly hard to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical consumption: It shows a behavioral pattern of substance use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: A window of 5-7 days is needed before drugs appear in hair.
  • Higher expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur greater costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although called “hair follicle tests”, the analysis is on the strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
