Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Millville, Massachusetts. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing nationwide, we have centers in various cities ready to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is needed. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests over standard urine tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often require hair testing for zero-tolerance policies. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests provide an extended detection of up to 90 days, are nearly impossible to tamper with, though urine testing remains most accurate for use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection period of 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil), close to the scalp yields 100mg, making it an ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This process confirms the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires verification to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is deemed the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It supplies a pattern of drug usage over a timeline, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
