Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Amherst, Massachusetts. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair evaluations, with testing centers available across cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized detection needs.

Of late, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now request hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal institutions, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair drug tests is their prolonged detection ability for drug use, extending up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and are notably difficult to alter. Yet, for verifying drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate tool.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended chronicle of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands’ fibers during growth. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for assessment and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, the recommendation is 150mg of the specimen. We advocate for measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves confirming the sealing and shipping adequacy of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a quick initial inspection for drug abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly strategy to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from the hair at a notably lower concentration in contrast to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Challenges in deceiving: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides past data: It can offer a usage trend over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug examination techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
