Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in North Attleborough, MA. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair testing and our facilities are available in cities nationwide to conduct this test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation circumstances. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period up to 90 days, gathered in an observed manner, and are almost uncheatable. Yet, for drug use in the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the core of the developing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month detection span for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable portion of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory methodology for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This process involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any supplementary data recording absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for abused drugs. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, results showing a positive screen require confirmation to be admissible in a legal context. Any samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drug substances are removed from hair at concentrations much lower than other testing methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to conduct.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples yielding presumptive positives are cleansed ahead of confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Displays usage history: It can exhibit a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the actual test evaluates the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
