Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Seekonk, Massachusetts. Whether you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair analysis with testing facilities located across all major cities nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown between 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, though body hair might also suffice. Tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and specialized options.

In recent developments, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method of drug testing. A range of employers, judicial bodies, and those involved in substance abuse counseling now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. This method is favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of the hair follicle test is its extended drug detection duration of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and it is nearly impossible to falsify. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair—ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples yielding a presumptively positive result in Screening need secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. This stage involves removing drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's quite challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a usage pattern over time rather than merely recent drug use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the subscalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
